Sheryl Lightfoot joined the First Nations Studies Program in 2009. She come by way of the Department of Political Science at the University of Minnesota. Specializing in international relations with a focus on Indigenous rights movements, Sheryl holds a joint position with UBC's Department of Political Science.

Sheryl's Brief Biography
Sheryl Lightfoot (PhD – University of Minnesota) is Anishinaabe, a citizen of the Lake Superior Band of Ojibwe, enrolled at the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community in Baraga, Michigan. She currently holds a joint appointment with the First Nations Studies Program and the Department of Political Science. Her research interests include global Indigenous peoples’ politics, Indigenous diplomacy, Indigenous social movements, and critical international relations. She publishes articles in both Indigenous studies and international relations venues. She is currently writing a book based upon her award-winning Ph.D. dissertation, “Indigenous Global Politics” which examines how the global Indigenous rights movement has challenged some of the fundamental tenets of international relations.
